7 Forex Strategies for Beginners and How to Test Them
Seven simple, widely used forex strategies explained with entry, stop and target ideas, plus how to test them honestly.
First, a warning
No strategy wins every trade, and a strategy that works in one market can fail in another. Treat the ideas below as starting points that you must test, not as guaranteed systems.
Trend and breakout ideas
1) Moving-average trend following: trade in the direction of price relative to the 50 or 200 average and buy pullbacks to it. 2) Breakout and retest: enter after price breaks a range and returns to test it. 3) Donchian breakout: buy a break of the N-day high, sell a break of the N-day low.
Reversal and range ideas
4) Support and resistance bounce with a candlestick confirmation. 5) RSI mean reversion in ranges. 6) Bollinger Band reversion: fade closes outside the bands back toward the middle.
Session ideas
7) London open breakout: the first hours of the London session often set the day's range. Trade the break with a stop on the other side of the range and a target of one to two times the risk.
How to test
Write the rules down, run them on at least a few hundred trades or several years of data, include costs, and look at maximum drawdown. Then forward-test on a demo account. If you cannot describe the rule in two sentences, it is too vague to test.
Choosing between them
If you have little time, choose a daily-chart trend or breakout approach and check once a day. If you can watch the London session, a session breakout may fit. If you dislike losing streaks, avoid strategies with low win rates and large winners until you are ready for long dry spells.
Pick one, trade it for at least 50 trades, and only then judge it. Switching strategies after three losses guarantees you never learn anything.
Key takeaways
- Start with simple trend, breakout or range rules.
- Write rules before testing.
- Include costs and drawdown.
- Forward-test on demo.
