Position Sizing for Crypto: Handling 5% Daily Swings

Crypto moves faster than forex or stocks. Learn how to size positions, set stops and pick leverage for volatile markets.

Volatility is the point

Bitcoin regularly moves 2-5% in a day and altcoins far more. A stop that works on EUR/USD would be hit constantly. Size positions using the actual volatility of the coin.

The formula

Risk amount ÷ stop distance (in price) = position size in coins. If you risk $100 and place your stop $2,000 below entry on BTC, you can hold 0.05 BTC. Notional value is about 0.05 × price, regardless of the leverage you pick.

Leverage is only margin

Leverage does not change your risk if your size is set by the stop. It only changes how much margin you lock up and how near liquidation sits. Choose leverage so that liquidation is at least twice as far as your stop.

Altcoins and gaps

Thin altcoins can gap through stops, so reduce size. Do not average down on a falling coin without a plan, and keep total exposure across correlated coins in check since most altcoins move with Bitcoin.

Example: sizing an ETH trade

Account $5,000, risk 1% = $50. ETH is $3,000 and the chart stop is at $2,850, 150 dollars below entry. Size = $50 ÷ $150 = 0.33 ETH, a position worth about $1,000.

You can open that with 3x leverage using about $333 margin, or on spot with no leverage at all. The risk is the same $50 either way.

Reducing risk further

Cap your total crypto exposure to a percentage of your net worth that you could lose without changing your life. Spread entries over several levels instead of a single order. Reduce size before events such as exchange hacks, regulatory news or large token unlocks. Keep a cash or stablecoin reserve for opportunities.

Key takeaways

  • Size by stop distance, not by feel.
  • Leverage only sets margin and liquidation distance.
  • Reduce size on thin coins.
  • Correlated coins add up.
