Fibonacci Retracement: How to Use 38.2%, 50% and 61.8%
Learn how to draw a Fibonacci retracement correctly, which levels traders watch and how to combine them with structure.
The idea
After a strong move, price often pulls back part of the way before continuing. Fibonacci retracement levels (23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6%) mark common pullback depths. They work partly because so many traders watch the same numbers.
How to draw it
In an uptrend, click the swing low and drag to the swing high. The tool plots the levels between them. In a downtrend, draw from the swing high to the swing low. Use clear swings; choosing them differently changes every level.
Which levels matter
The 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% levels are the most watched. Shallow pullbacks (38.2%) suggest a strong trend, deeper ones (61.8%) a weaker one. A close beyond 78.6% often means the trend is in doubt.
Make it a setup
A level alone is not a reason to trade. Look for confluence: a Fibonacci level that lines up with prior support, a moving average or a trend line, plus a candlestick confirmation. Put the stop beyond the swing and target the previous high or an extension (127.2% or 161.8%).
Example: a 61.8% pullback
A pair rallies from 1.0500 to 1.0800, a 300-pip move. A 61.8% retracement is 185 pips back, at 1.0615. If that area is also a prior resistance turned support and a bullish engulfing candle forms, the trader buys, puts the stop under 1.0580 and targets 1.0800 or the 127.2% extension at 1.0880.
Risk is about 35 pips against a possible 185-265, so the setup pays more than five times the risk if it works.
Limits to remember
Fibonacci levels are not exact and not magical. Price often reverses between levels or ignores them altogether. They work best as a way to find an area where several reasons to buy or sell overlap, and as a tool to place a logical stop and a target. Treat the tool as a map, not a prediction.
Key takeaways
- Retracements mark common pullback depths.
- Draw from clear swing to swing.
- Use confluence, not a single level.
- Stops go beyond the swing.
