Funding Rates: What They Tell You About Crypto Positioning
Funding rates show whether longs or shorts are paying. Learn how to read them, what extremes mean and their limits as a signal.
The basics
A positive funding rate means longs pay shorts; a negative rate means shorts pay longs. The rate is a percentage of position value for each funding interval, so a small number repeated many times adds up over weeks.
What extremes can suggest
Very high positive funding shows crowded, leveraged longs. It does not guarantee a drop, but the market becomes fragile because a small decline can trigger liquidations that push price further down. Very negative funding shows crowded shorts and the risk of a squeeze.
Using funding as a filter
Traders compare funding with price trend and open interest. Rising price with rising open interest and high funding means leveraged buying. Rising price with falling open interest means shorts closing, which is often weaker.
Costs when you hold
If you hold a perp long while funding is high, you pay that rate continuously. Include it in your plan for any trade held longer than a day. Compare funding between exchanges, because it can differ.
Example: reading a crowded market
Bitcoin rises 15% in two weeks, open interest climbs by 20% and funding reaches +0.08% per 8 hours (about 88% annualised). Many leveraged longs are paying a high price to stay in. A pullback of 5% could start a chain of forced liquidations.
A cautious trader might cut leverage, take partial profits or wait for a pullback, rather than adding to a position at the most crowded moment.
Where to see funding
Most exchanges show the current and predicted funding rate on the contract page, and third-party dashboards compare rates across exchanges. Large differences between exchanges can show where leverage is concentrated. Note the interval too, because hourly funding at 0.01% is eight times the cost of 8-hour funding at the same number.
Key takeaways
- Positive funding: longs pay.
- Extremes mean crowding, not a timing signal.
- Check price, open interest and funding together.
- Funding is a real cost when holding.
