How to Compare Prop Firms: 9 Rules That Matter More Than the Price

Compare prop firms on drawdown type, profit target, payout speed, consistency rules and fees, not just the cheapest challenge.

Price is the least important number

A cheap challenge with harsh rules costs more than an expensive one you can pass. Compare what you must do and what you can keep before you look at the fee.

The nine rules to check

1) Profit target (8-10% is common, some firms have one phase). 2) Daily loss limit and whether it is based on balance or equity. 3) Maximum drawdown and whether it is static or trailing. 4) Minimum trading days. 5) News and weekend holding restrictions. 6) Allowed instruments and leverage. 7) Consistency rules that cap how much of your profit can come from one day. 8) Profit split (often 80-90%). 9) Payout schedule and minimum payout.

Proof of payouts

Look for independent evidence that the firm pays traders: dated payout certificates, trader reviews that mention withdrawals and a company history of more than a year or two. Marketing claims are not evidence.

Match the firm to your style

Swing traders need weekend holding allowed. Scalpers need low minimum holding times to be allowed. News traders need to check the restriction windows. If your style conflicts with a rule, move on to another firm.

A comparison worksheet

Make a table with columns for fee, target, daily loss, max loss, drawdown type, minimum days, news rule, split, first payout rule and payout cycle. Fill it for three firms and highlight the rule that would be hardest for your style.

The firm with the fewest highlighted cells is usually the best match, even if it is not the cheapest.

Warning signs

Be careful with firms that hide their ownership, change rules without notice, advertise unrealistic payouts, have no verifiable company registration or push you toward a faster, more expensive plan. Read the terms and keep screenshots of the rules at the time you buy.

Key takeaways

  • Compare rules before fees.
  • Know static versus trailing drawdown.
  • Check consistency and news rules.
  • Look for real payout evidence.

FAQ

  • Are prop firms legit? Many pay out real money, but terms are strict and the firms earn mainly from challenge fees. Read the rules, start with one challenge and verify payout history.
