Price Action Trading: Reading Structure Without Indicators

Price action means trading from raw candles and structure. Learn swings, trends, ranges and the simple rules behind them.

Market structure

An uptrend is a series of higher highs and higher lows; a downtrend is lower highs and lower lows. A range has no clear progression. Identify which of the three you are in before anything else.

Trend change

In an uptrend, the first sign of weakness is a lower high followed by a break of the last higher low. Call this a break of structure. It does not predict a new downtrend, but it tells you to stop buying every dip.

Entries from structure

Buy the pullback to a prior swing low or a flipped resistance in an uptrend, with a rejection candle as confirmation. Sell the equivalent in a downtrend. In a range, fade the edges and exit before the middle.

Why indicators are optional

Indicators are derived from price, so they lag it. Price action traders keep charts clean and focus on levels, structure and candles. You can still add one or two indicators for trend and momentum if they help your discipline.

A checklist for any chart

1) Is the market trending or ranging on the higher timeframe? 2) Where are the nearest swing highs and lows? 3) Has structure broken recently? 4) Where would my stop go and does the target give at least 1:2? 5) Is there a rejection candle at my level?

If you cannot answer yes to the last two, wait. Doing nothing is a position.

Practice exercise

Open a chart, hide all indicators and scroll back six months. Mark each swing high and low, label the trend, and note where structure broke. Then scroll forward one candle at a time and write down what you would do before revealing the next candle. After twenty setups you will see which ideas you can read in real time.

Key takeaways

  • Know if the market trends or ranges.
  • Break of structure = warning, not a reversal call.
  • Enter on pullbacks with confirmation.
  • Keep the chart clean.
