Static vs Trailing Drawdown: The Prop Firm Rule That Fails the Most Traders

Understand static, trailing, balance-based and equity-based drawdown so you do not breach a prop firm account by surprise.

Why it matters

Most failed challenges break the drawdown rule, not the profit target. The rule sounds simple but is calculated in different ways between firms.

Static drawdown

The loss limit is a fixed level based on your starting balance. On a $100,000 account with a 10% static limit your account may never fall below $90,000, no matter how much profit you make. Profits give you more room as the account grows.

Trailing drawdown

The limit follows your highest balance or equity. If you grow to $105,000, a 10% trailing limit now sits at $94,500 and keeps rising as you make new highs. Some firms stop the trail once it reaches the starting balance. Trailing drawdown punishes giving back open profits.

Balance versus equity

Balance-based rules measure closed trades only. Equity-based rules include floating profit and loss, so a deep open loss can breach the limit before you close. Always check which one applies to the daily loss limit too, and what time the daily reset happens.

Example: a trailing breach

A $100,000 account has a 10% trailing drawdown from the highest equity. You run profit up to $108,000, so the floor moves to $97,200. A pullback of just $10,800 now ends the account, even though you are still above your starting balance.

Many traders get stopped out this way after a great start. With trailing rules, bank profits by closing winners rather than letting floating equity run.

How to protect yourself

Set a personal daily stop far inside the firm's limit, check the account equity before opening a trade, use stop losses on every position and avoid adding to a floating loss. With trailing rules, take partial profits when a trade reaches 1R so the high-water mark does not run ahead of your realised profit.

Key takeaways

  • Static limits are easier than trailing ones.
  • Trailing follows your high-water mark.
  • Equity rules include open trades.
  • Check the daily reset time.
