Morning Star and Evening Star

Three candle reversal patterns that mark the end of a move.

A morning star has a large bearish candle, a small indecision candle (often a gap or doji), then a large bullish candle closing well into the first candle. An evening star is the reverse at highs.

The middle candle shows the momentum change, the third candle shows the new side taking control. The deeper the third candle closes into the first, the better.

Stops go beyond the pattern extreme. Look for patterns at support or resistance and on higher timeframes.

Key takeaways

  • Three candles: move, pause, reversal
  • Third candle should close deep into the first
  • Better on higher timeframes at key levels
