Double Top and Double Bottom
Two failed attempts at a level, forming the M and W shapes.
A double top has two peaks at roughly the same level with a trough between them. It forms after an uptrend and suggests buyers failed twice. A double bottom is the W shape after a downtrend.
Confirmation is a close beyond the middle trough (the neckline). The measured target is the height of the pattern projected from the break.
Beware of patterns where the second peak is far above the first. That is a breakout attempt, not a double top.
Key takeaways
- M and W shapes at similar levels
- Confirm on a break of the middle trough
- Target = pattern height
