False Breakouts and How to Avoid Them
Why many breakouts fail and how to filter them.
A false breakout is a move beyond a level that quickly reverses. They trap breakout traders and are common around obvious levels.
Filters help: wait for a candle close beyond the level, check volume or momentum, look for a retest that holds, and avoid breakouts into nearby levels.
Some traders trade the failure itself: when price breaks and quickly closes back inside, the opposite side may be favoured.
Key takeaways
- Close beyond the level, not just a wick
- Retest that holds improves odds
- A failed breakout can be a signal in itself
