The Perfect Trading System
System design principles that stand the test of time
The perfect trading system doesn't exist — but robust systems share common characteristics.
Robust system characteristics: 1. Simple rules (5-7 maximum) 2. Works across multiple instruments 3. Works across multiple timeframes 4. Profitable in backtest AND forward test 5. Survives different market regimes 6. Has acceptable maximum drawdown 7. Positive Sharpe ratio (>1)
Design principles: - Fewer parameters = more robust - Test on out-of-sample data - Include transaction costs in testing - Allow for slippage and spread variation - System must match your personality and lifestyle
The edge formula: Edge = (Win Rate × Avg Win) - (Loss Rate × Avg Loss) If Edge > 0, you have a system. Everything else is optimization.
Pro tip: The best system is one you can actually follow consistently. A "perfect" system you can't execute is worthless..
Common mistake: Endlessly searching for a 100% win rate system. Better: It doesn't exist. Focus on positive expected value with acceptable drawdown..
Key takeaways
- Simple rules (5-7 max) are more robust
- Must work across instruments and regimes
- System must match your personality
- Positive expected value is the only requirement
Quiz
