Smart Money Concepts Intro
How institutions really trade
Smart Money Concepts (SMC) focuses on how institutional traders move markets — and how you can align with them.
Core ideas: 1. Liquidity: Banks target areas where retail stop-losses cluster (above swing highs, below swing lows). They need this liquidity to fill large orders.
2. Order Blocks: Zones where institutions placed orders. Usually the last opposite-color candle before a strong move.
3. Fair Value Gaps (FVG): Three-candle patterns where the middle candle's range doesn't overlap neighbors, creating an imbalance price tends to fill.
4. Break of Structure (BOS): When price breaks a significant swing high/low, confirming trend direction.
5. Change of Character (CHoCH): First break of structure against the current trend — early reversal signal.
Pro tip: Don't overcomplicate SMC. At its core, it's about understanding where big players placed their orders and where they'll hunt stops..
Common mistake: Marking every small candle as an order block. Better: True order blocks create strong, impulsive moves. If the resulting move wasn't strong, it's not a valid OB..
Key takeaways
- Institutions hunt retail stop-losses for liquidity
- Order blocks mark institutional entry zones
- FVGs are imbalances price tends to fill
- BOS confirms trend, CHoCH signals potential reversal
