Trading the News
Profiting from economic data releases
News trading involves taking positions around scheduled economic data releases. The key is understanding that markets move on SURPRISES, not the data itself.
If data matches expectations → minimal movement If data beats expectations → currency strengthens (usually) If data misses expectations → currency weakens (usually)
Two approaches: 1. Straddle: Place buy stop above and sell stop below current price before the event. Captures whichever direction the market moves.
2. Fade the spike: Wait for the initial reaction, then trade the reversal if the spike is overextended.
Risk management is critical — spreads widen and slippage increases during news events.
Pro tip: The first move on news is often a fakeout. Wait 5-15 minutes for the dust to settle before trading the reaction..
Common mistake: Opening a large position right before NFP with tight stops. Better: Either sit out, use straddle orders, or wait 15 minutes after the release.
