Building Your System
Creating an objective, testable trading method
A trading system is a set of specific, objective rules that define every aspect of your trading:
1. Market selection: What do you trade and why? 2. Timeframes: Higher TF for trend, lower for entry 3. Entry rules: Specific, objective conditions (not "looks bullish") 4. Exit rules: Stop-loss and take-profit levels 5. Position sizing: Based on ATR and account risk 6. Filters: What keeps you OUT of bad trades? 7. Management: Trailing stops, partial exits
Testing your system: - Backtest on 200+ trades minimum - Forward test on demo for 2-3 months - Track metrics: Win rate, avg R:R, max drawdown, Sharpe - Only go live if the system is profitable over enough samples
A good system should have positive expectancy: (Win% × Avg Win) - (Loss% × Avg Loss) > 0
Pro tip: The best systems are simple. 3-5 rules maximum. If you can't explain your system in 30 seconds, it's too complex..
Common mistake: Optimizing until you get 90% win rate on backtesting. Better: Over-optimization (curve fitting) destroys real-world performance. Keep it simple..
Key takeaways
- System = specific objective rules for every decision
- Backtest 200+ trades minimum
- Forward test for 2-3 months on demo
- Positive expectancy is required
