Chart Types
Line, bar, and candlestick charts compared
There are three main chart types used in trading: Line charts, Bar charts, and Candlestick charts.
Line charts connect closing prices with a line. They are the simplest and cleanest, great for identifying overall trends but lacking detail about intra-period price action.
Bar charts (OHLC) show open, high, low, and close as a vertical bar with tick marks. The left tick is the open, the right tick is the close. They show the same information as candlesticks but are less visually intuitive.
Candlestick charts are the most popular because they are visually clear. The colored body makes it easy to see bullish vs bearish periods at a glance. Most professional traders use candlestick charts.
Other chart types exist: Heikin Ashi (smoothed candles for trend following), Renko (time-independent, based on price movement), and Point & Figure (focuses on significant price changes).
Pro tip: Use line charts on higher timeframes to see the big picture clearly.
Pro tip: Heikin Ashi candles are great for staying in trends but bad for entries.
Common mistake: Using exotic chart types as a beginner. Better: Start with standard candlestick charts and master reading them first.
