Moving Averages
Smoothing price to reveal the trend
Moving averages (MAs) smooth out price data to reveal the underlying trend. They are the most widely used indicators in trading.
Simple Moving Average (SMA): The average closing price over N periods. Equal weight to all periods. The 50 SMA and 200 SMA are the most watched by institutions.
Exponential Moving Average (EMA): Gives more weight to recent prices, making it faster to react. The 20 EMA and 50 EMA are popular for short-term trading.
Key signals: - Golden Cross: 50 MA crosses above 200 MA → Bullish - Death Cross: 50 MA crosses below 200 MA → Bearish - Price above MA → Bullish bias - Price below MA → Bearish bias
MAs also act as dynamic support and resistance. In an uptrend, price often bounces off the 20 or 50 EMA.
Pro tip: The 200 MA is the single most watched indicator by institutional traders.
Pro tip: Use EMA for faster signals and SMA for more reliable (but slower) signals.
Common mistake: Using too many moving averages (5+ on one chart). Better: Use 2-3 MAs maximum to avoid confusion.
Common mistake: Treating MA crossovers as instant buy/sell signals. Better: Wait for confirmation — MAs are lagging indicators.
Key takeaways
- SMA = equal weight average, EMA = weighted toward recent prices
- 50 and 200 MAs are most institutional
- Golden Cross = bullish, Death Cross = bearish
- MAs act as dynamic support/resistance
