Understanding Pips

The smallest unit of price measurement

A pip (Percentage in Point) is the smallest standard price movement in forex trading.

For most currency pairs: 1 pip = 0.0001 (the 4th decimal place) Example: EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851 = 1 pip move

For JPY pairs: 1 pip = 0.01 (the 2nd decimal place) Example: USD/JPY moves from 150.50 to 150.51 = 1 pip move

Pipettes: Some brokers quote to 5 decimal places. The 5th decimal is a pipette (1/10th of a pip).

Pip value depends on lot size: - Standard lot (100,000 units): ~$10 per pip - Mini lot (10,000 units): ~$1 per pip - Micro lot (1,000 units): ~$0.10 per pip

Knowing pip values is essential for calculating position size and risk.

Pro tip: Use ScaleEdge's pip calculator in the Tools section for quick calculations.

Common mistake: Confusing pips with pipettes (5th decimal place). Better: A pip is always the 4th decimal (2nd for JPY). The 5th decimal is a pipette..

Key takeaways

  • 1 pip = 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for JPY pairs
  • Standard lot = ~$10/pip, Mini = ~$1/pip, Micro = ~$0.10/pip
  • Pip value is essential for risk calculation

Quiz

  • How much is 1 pip worth on a mini lot (10K)? Answer: $1. Mini lot (10,000 units) = approximately $1 per pip movement.
  • For USD/JPY, 1 pip equals: Answer: 0.01. JPY pairs use 2 decimal places, so 1 pip = 0.01.
