Williams %R and Rate of Change

Two simple momentum tools and how to read them.

Williams %R is similar to the stochastic on a -100 to 0 scale. Readings above -20 are overbought and below -80 oversold. Rate of Change (ROC) shows the percentage change in price over N periods.

ROC crossing above zero shows positive momentum. Both are fast and noisy, so use them with trend and levels.

Each tool measures speed. Choose one momentum oscillator and learn it well rather than switching constantly.

Key takeaways

  • Williams %R scale: -100 to 0
  • ROC = percentage change over N periods
  • Pick one oscillator and master it

Quiz

  • Williams %R above -20 is: Answer: Overbought. It signals overbought.
  • ROC measures: Answer: Percentage change over N periods. It is a rate of change.
  • Better approach to oscillators: Answer: Master one. Depth beats breadth.
